…Esperanza ate in the canteen, it was a first experience of seeing how children with different lives than hers interacted with each other. She saw that they were all happy and laughing, and must have had parents that worked, whereas her mother did not. By teaching her sister and her friends about hips, Esperanza develops a sense that she is more mature, older, and more knowledgeable on the differences between women and girls than them.
