In 1848 wide spread revolutions occurred throughout what we now call Italy. There were many reasons for these revolutions: Firstly France had set up a republic in February 1848 so many other countries took this as an example that revolutions did work. There had been a revolution in Vienna (Austria) which meant most of the Austrian troops that occupied Italy had to leave. …in breaking down the start of the revolutions. When the trouble was put down at home and the Austrian troops returned, they could help in the battle against the dwindling amount of revolutionaries. There was also French Catholics coming in under the order of their ruler, Louis Napoleon, who were helping put down the Roman Republic. With the overwhelming support against their fight for liberalism the revolutions failed and the hated foreign influence stayed put!
