China has undertaken the greatest project since the erection of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal -- the Three Gorges Dam project. Moreover, silt trapped behind the dam will not only deprive downstream regions, but also will impede power generation from the back-up. Construction of the dam would require extensive logging in the area. Finally, the dam and the reservoir will destroy some of China's finest scenery and an important source of tourism revenue.
