…replaced the "wet" collodian with a thin coating of gelatin and silver nitrate. Since the emulsion (light sensitive material on the film) was dry possibilities before impossible were unleashed. The need for the portable darkroom disappeared, the plates could be developed at any time. Also, by accident, when the plates were heated to dry the gelatin, it became more sensitive to light. This further decreased the exposure length needed to expose the film to light.
