Excess and Restraint refers to either the elements of design or to the conceptual content of a piece. An artwork can be excessive or restrained in the design elements or it may deal with a concept which is excessive in nature. Where Gittoes used excessive elements to highlight the theory of his pieces, Bosch used excessiveness in conjunction with restraint to emphasise the conceptual content. They also differed in that Gittoes paintings are focused on issues affecting the world, while Bosch focused on issues regarding society and mankind.
