In the short story, "The Storm," Kate Chopin uses the setting to illuminate the theme. The development of the storm parallels the development of the love affair between Calixta and Alcee. Like a storm, which is a passing occurrence, so is the love affair between Calixta and Alcee. Just as the storm suddenly develops, Alcee suddenly pursues Calixta. …occasion. As one can see from the text, it must have been warm since there are beads of perspiration on Calixta as she is seating at the sewing machine. So it may have been a unique experience to have a storm. As seen in each section we can see how the progression of the storm parallels the maturation of the affair between Alcee and Calixta, which might not have occurred if not for the storm.
