see through him, he is calm in temperament even though he resented what Hester did. Hester is a beautiful, passionate, and brave woman. She represents the "truth" in the story. Lastly is Dimmesdale, he is a highly-regarded young minister and has a bright future. But the side that he does not show to the crowd is his timidity and cowardice. Their character affects the motivation of their actions which is reflected in the whole novel.
