Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter revolves around the theme of sin and the effects it has on the mind, body, and soul. …Puritans days did. Many people in today's society had committed adultery without suffering any punishments. Unlike the Puritans in the 1800's where they suffer many punishments or have to hide from their sins as Dimmesdale did to avoid being punished. In the sinfulness of the major characters in the novel of The Scarlet letter, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Hester Prynne are guilty of the greatest sin in this order according to the Puritan standards.
