The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel about sinfulness, revenge and purity. The setting takes place in the seventeenth century in the small Puritan town in Boston, Massachusetts. The protagonist, Hester Prynne has been accused of committing adultery and forced to wear a scarlet letter on her gown as a punishment. She is Hester's constant reminder that her responsibility here is to provide care and protection for her. <Tab/>As Hawthorne shows the reader, Pearl's distinctiveness as a symbol plays throughout the novel. Her presence encourages Hester Pyrnne to live life and retain even the smallest amount of hope left inside of her. Pearl is her mother's savior and provides a sense of happiness and serenity because of what she represents.
