Tess Durbeyfield, the heroine of the novel, has a life that exemplifies the conflict between enjoyment and the detailed forces against enjoyment. Along with Tess there are her parents John Durbeyfield amd Joan Durbeyfield and her siblings Eliza Louisa Durbeyfield and Abraham Durbeyfield.
