Spades use of Emotion

Throughout this book Spade lets his emotions dictate his actions. When he is able to control his emotions during a critical situation everything works out for his benefit. When Spade's emotions boil over it results in violence, but the situations still end up working out in his favor. In this situation he is unable to maintain his emotional cool, which results in his violent nature, "The fat man said tolerantly: 'Well sir, I must say you have a most violent temper.'"(pg.109) Gutman says this right to Spade. In the end he does make a successful deal with Gutman, which shows us that Spade has the ability to get what he wants whether its through peace or violence.
