…The South was facing much corruption and unrest in politics, the white Southerners took advantage of the losing interest of the Republicans, and much violence erupted in the area. Four years of this existed, and when issues came about the winner of the election of 1876, it was ultimately decided that Rutherford Hayes would win the election in exchange for home rule to be returned in the South, and thus brought the total destruction of Reconstruction.
