I believe that if Steinbeck had not chosen to use responsibility as a theme in this novel it would have been almost impossible to try and relate to the characters. By making the characters face challenges that were similar to those that we face in our own lives, he was able to demonstrate how greatly the importance of responsibility affects us all.
