He emphasis the brilliant detective skills of Holmes by allowing the reader to see how effortlessly he solves the crimes with only the smallest detail to go on. The Sherlock Holmes stories have stood the test of time and this, in my opinion is mainly to do with the excellent narrative skills of Watson.
