Does Aristotle establish a clear link between substance and essence? Aristotle was born in Stageira in north Greece in 384 BC. He firstly trained in medicine, and then in 367 went to Athens to study philosophy with Plato. Aristotle opposed some of Plato's teachings. …is clear. Plato and Aristotle, used the word ousia, but they used it to mean "being-ness" in two different senses: true being, and the true being of something. Greek philosophy translators came up with two different words for ousia, these were substantia and essential. Substantia is an ordinary Latin word which meant what ousia normally meant in Greek--property. Essentiais a word derived from the Latin verb "to be" which means, more or less, means, "being-ness."
