He was made a deal by de Guiche to marry Roxane, someone Valvert had no feelings for, so that de Guiche could have an affair with Roxane. Valvert's intelligence level wasn't too high, it appeared, as he challenged Cyrano to a duel. Cyrano quickly disposed of Valvert, even while reciting a poem. This became just another failed plan created by de Guiche.
