As resource development continues in the 1980s, resource-based manufacturing will grow in the western and Atlantic provinces. The western provinces now account for a significant and growing proportion of the metal-fabricating and machinery output. The CMA strongly supported the free trade agreement proposed by the Mulroney government, arguing that it will create significant investment and employment opportunities for Canadian manufacturers.
