British women 1700-2000

"Sense and Sensibility" was written during the age of Enlightenment, in the 18th century, an era of deep philosophical thought and separation from the Church. The Enlightenment emphasised education and moral, so women were educated as well. However, as men studied philosophy and science, women were taught to sing, paint and draw. …Service was established: they provided evacuees cleaners with refreshments during the clean-up of bombings in London, and knitted socks for men on the frontiers. Women were even allowed to join the army, working for the air force, the navy or as secret agents. Many also worked as entertainers to try and keep the spirit up.
