East Germans would go from East Germany to Hungary and from there to West Germany, or another other Western European state. On November 10, 1989 and on December 22, 1989 checkpoints were opened for pedestrians at the Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenberg Gate. On July 1, 1990 East and West Germany were united. All restrictions and travel between East and West Germany were dropped.
