Beowulf

A common theme in mid-evil literature seems to be heroism. Two such cases of literature is Beowulf, by an unknown author, and The Prince, by Niccolo Machavelli. In these works, the author seems to be giving their ideas and philosophies on how to be a good leader. In this essay, I will examine both of these texts, analyze the traits the author gives for being a good leader, and argue why I believe that Beowulf …

…knows that when he fights an enemy like Grendel or Grendel's mother he will achieve immortality as the victor or the loser. Even with the enormous amount of confidence Beowulf possesses, he understands that fate will work its magic no matter what and he could be killed at any point in his life. He faces that reality by showing no fear and preparing for either a positive or a fatal outcome in all his battles.
