THE SCARLET LETTER
The novel The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is set in the mid 1600’s. When the first scene opens the main character Hester is convicted of committing the sin of adultery. She is forced to wear the letter “A” on her breast. This letter “A” is a huge part of the story for many people. The “A” is shown as a sin and to certain characters the sin means different things.

Dimmesdale suffered Chillingworth in a way grew stronger from the “A”. By keeping the sin inside, the “A” became a reminder of Dimmesdales guilt and the sin. Dimmesdale allowed the “A” to eat away at him inside. In society, one can see how a

certain object can remind them of a sinful or memorable event. This one object could create an infinite number of emotions or meanings, just like the scarlet letter “A”.
