Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron, became one of the world’s most well known fighter pilots of World War I. Manfred was born in Breslau, Poland, which is now Germany. As a small child he loved to take risks. Once as a boy Richthofen climbed a church steeple and tied his handkerchief to it for fun. He became a far better athlete than student and

enemy you could not shoot down in battle across enemy lines. Arthur Brown was officially credited with the victory but evidence suggests the Baron was hit by a single bullet from a machine gun in the trenches. Manfred was buried in France with full military honors, but his body was later moved to a family cemetery in Wiesbaden. The Red Baron gained the respect of all he flew with and the enemies he chased after.
