After reading the play ‘night, Mother, by Marsha Norman, I have come to the conclusion, due to my response to this piece, that the main theme of this play is loneliness and hopelessness. To me, this was quite obvious because of the play’s main topic, suicide. Suicide is a great tragedy for all involved, including the victim and the people left behind. t know. In the end, regardless of personal experiences, this play will have moved you, if not because of good acting, because of good writing. That is the base of theatre. Without it, ‘night, Mother would be no more a story of loneliness and hopelessness than a story of happiness. It obviously doesn’t take a trained critic to see that this play is not a comedy. That is what good writing is all about.
