Americans feel that voting is essential to democracy. But the truth lies to the contrary. For a democratic government to function correctly, its citizens are called upon to participate in the proceedings of the political process. Because of the nation’s low voter turnout, our government has essentially been rendered ineffective, and the power that was once held in the hands of the civic-minded, voting American majority has fallen at the feet of uncompromising politicians.
