Countless atrocities occurred in the United States while black men and women were fighting for their rights as American citizens. At the turn of the century in the year 1900, there were over 100 recorded lynchings. In the 29-year span between 1889 and 1918 there was an estimated 3,224 lynchings. In the tradition of white southern officials, only 30% of the guilty parties were ever accused of the crime.
