Bilbo’s Development in The Hobbit
J.R.R. Tolkein’s novel The Hobbit is a fantasy novel in which Bilbo, the main character, encounters various adventures with a crew of dwarves. Through countless excursions into the wild it is obvious that Bilbo develops greatly into a wonderfully cheerful hero. Bloom states it best when he states that, “we, like Bilbo, are not cognizant of their heroic capabilities. These qualities develop gradually before our eyes and theirs”(94). One can see the gradual development that Bilbo goes through. Succeeding in his adventures gave him confidence, competence, and self-sufficiency that helped him develop into a genuine hero.
