When Brown’s final day of life came, he was lowered to his grave and “they carved no hopeful verse upon his tombstone; for his dying hour was gloom.” The author does a wonderful job of invalidating the main belief of Puritanism that the harder a person works for God or the Bible he/she will be safe from sin.
