I really enjoyed the reading given by Gloria Naylor on her book, The Women of
Brewster Place. Naylor stated in her reading that the wall that blocked off Brewster Place

in her own way. The women of Brewster Place pulled together and supported each other
in rough times. Without Mattie, Ceil probably would not have lived through the death of
her daughter. Each woman that lived in the building called Brewster Place knew what it
meant to deal with sexism and racism and through the support of the other women they
triumphed through hard times.
