By creating separate tones for each of the tales, Chaucer reveals his personal beliefs about relying on social institutions verses God's will. Chaucer obviously believes in obeying the will of God, while he quickly reveals the flaws in social institutions. The comparison of the miller's and pardoner's tales suggests that Chaucer has no faith in man-made institutions and human imperfection; Chaucer only trusts God himself.
