The Igbo tribes would always consult the Oracle, or their ancestors before declaring war because they feared punishment from their gods. Religion not only emphasizes peace for the Igbo’s but also emphasizes an individuals obligation to the community. For Instance, when Okonkwo breaks the Week of Peace by beating his youngest wife he not only breaks a law of the tribe, but breaks many religious rules as well.
