In the novel All the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren, Sadie Burke’s mind is pulled in conflicting directions by two opposite forces. Although only a minor character, Sadie’s personality displays enough depth to contribute the themes in the novel. Caught in between loving and hating Willie, Sadie’s mind became the ultimate tug-of-war.

Who knows what would happen had Willie not gone to Chicago or got married? But the fact and irony of the matter is that Willie would be nothing with Sadie Burke and ends up nothing without Sadie Burke. However, now he realizes the pain that Sadie must feel all of this time.
