The true appreciation for this is not realized until the reader first understands the relationship between Akaky Akakievich and his precious overcoat, and how it serves as a maternal figure to him. Once this realization is made, however, it may make the reader wonder if Gogol may have had a similar relationship in his life that influenced his almost misogynistic view of a domineering woman.
