beginning of the story, he was nothing to society and to himself. After he got his new overcoat, he became happy with himself, and people started accepting him. His new coat was like a mask for how he really was. After he goes through with all of this, he comes back as a ghost so that other people can suffer just like he had suffered when they took his new overcoat, which was his protection.
