Even Golding himself says that "the theme (of the book) is an attempt to trace back the defects of society to the defects of human nature...The moral is that the shape of society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system." …

…Ralph that he also appears to perceive the existence of a beast. Jack explained, "If you're hunting sometimes you catch yourself feeling as if...you're not hunting, but-- being hunted, as if something's behind you all the time in the jungle"(53). This is significant because there definitely was beast hunting Jack. His evil personality, the beast, was preying on his good nature. Everyone on the island felt the beast, the wicked side of themselves emerging.
