The town of Thalia is filled with boredom and loneliness. The characters reflect this with their actions. They are bored so they get drunk and have sex with a cow. …plagues of Thalia. These two factors lead the characters to affairs, relationships, soul searching, and sexual adventures beyond their responsibilities. It is natural to explore, but the loneliness and boredom push the characters to try and prove their mature ness. They are really just showing how much they want to be older and more adventuresome. As Sam the Lion the only possible role model in the book dies we see the town die with him.
