We experience humiliation through witnessing Dugan anguish over his faults, and we feel sympathetic toward his desperate attempts at love. Dugan realizes that he will never have a perfect life, yet he tries to make everything work. Through his strong, straightforward style, Dugan is able to create an introspective view into the mind of a struggling poet and human being.
