John Merrick, also known as “the elephant man”, was a person who was born as an outcast of society. Born with a terrible condition, called proteus syndrome, which causes overgrowth of bone and other tissue, he was labeled as a “freak” in a circus sideshow. In addition, he was frequently tormented by others and was cursed by nightmares of his mother.
