John Merrick, also known as “the elephant man”, was a person who was born as an outcast of society. Born with a terrible condition, called proteus syndrome, which causes overgrowth of bone and other tissue, he was labeled as a “freak” in a circus sideshow. he was and how great life was, despite his appearance, which to many would be a misfortune, but to him, it was who he was. Dr. Treves shows John that humanity can be kind and loving. Sometimes it takes just one man to lead the way before anyone realizes what he or she is missing out on. Dr. Treves led the way and John Merrick felt like a human being. He belonged in this world.
