…found itself yet again in another war. War time means an economic boom. The unemployment rates that were once higher than ever before began to diminish. By the end of World War II, the Teamster Union membership reached an all time high of 1 million. At a 1952 Teamster Convention, Tobin announced his retirement, after forty-five years of holding office. By 1957, the membership of the union reached 1.5 million, and the infamous Jimmy Hoffa was elected as president.
