Just as the caterpillar starts out innocent black and white, and goes through several stages to emerge colourful as well as a more complete and experienced individual, so to did the characters in this novel. They became a person who has been through life-teaching experiences. The seven adolescents went through, and overcame many traumas, to become the mature adults that they were in the end of the novel.
