A reader will be able to relate better with her characters because of this. In “Story in Harlem Slang” the character spoke in slang for the reason that it was popular. This the way everybody spoke in Harlem. In “Sweat” they spoke with improper English.
This was because many people down South did not have an education. It was like a broken English. Many of them spoke this way because they knew no better.
