In 1994, after years of oppression by white minority rule, South Africa became a constitutional democracy elected by the people. In fact, the 1994 elections were the first democratic elections in South Africa where the majority of the population, particularly Black Africans, had a say in the government and running of the country. The advent of multi-party democracy, of universal suffrage, a bill of rights, and various other characteristics associated with an open and free society were seen as features of a modern liberal democratic state. Within the “new” South Africa, came a confidence that national reconciliation and nation building could establish a totally free society, and this confidence is what has caused South Africa to go from an authoritarian state to a democratic state.
