Solomon Northup was born in New York in July of 1808. Solomon’s father was a slave until his master granted him his freedom in his will. On Christmas day 1829, Solomon married Anne Hampton. He and his wife made a life for themselves at the Eagle Tavern by cooking, fiddling and farming. During the day he worked at a hotel and by night he was a violinist. Bass mailed out a letter that Northup wrote to friends in New York. Bass’s letter reached New York in early September of 1853. Solomon’s lawyer friend Henry Northup in New York was granted an agent of the sate to rescue Solomon. On January 21, 1853, Solomon Northup, now 44 years old, was reunited with his wife and children. Three months later Solomon write his story “Twelve Years a Slave” and it was later published that same year.
