Since the south had such enormous plantations, they needed labor to cultivate their fields. Slavery lasted in the southern colonies because the slaves were a permanent solution to the problem of finding labor. As people became more highly educated, they despised slavery because they felt it was morally wrong to enslave anybody, no matter what their ethnic origins, religion, or color.
