On March 27, 1924, Sarah Louis Vaughn was born in Newark, New Jersey. She had a very modest upbringing; Vaughn’s father was a carpenter, her mother a laundress. Nonetheless, music had always been a part of her life since the very beginning. Sarah’s mother was an active choir member and pianist at their local baptist church. Vaughn died at her home in California on April 3, 1990. Quincy Jones summed up the feeling of loss that both fans and musicians alike had felt about her passing; "She left a great big hole in my life."
