This film was Jean Renoirs greatest achievement as a director. It was an in depth
look at the hierarchy in France during the 1930’s. It involves a complex series of
love triangles between the lower and upper class. It is quite supprising how Renoir
could incorporate humor into a drama without any great loss of significance to the
story.
