social/ economical power like Gertrude might appear threatening and was often liked with carnality. She may have equal power but in reality her role was to act gracefully and be honourable. Elizabeth 1, like Gertrude knew the patriarchal system could not be defied. In Hamlet and Ophelia’s case the system is defined and it ends in upheaval and death. Being fully aware of this Elizabeth 1 adopted the ‘virgin queen’ identity, whilst Gertrude remarried.
