It was inevitable that blacks would stay at the bottom of southern society. Just because they were free didn't mean that their lives experienced a complete turnaround. The fact that they had no base on which to start their new lives made it even harder. Many might have been better off in slavery. The first generation of freed black had no parents to get them on their way; they were a generation which had never witnessed living free and who had no idea what do do first in this new life. Before they could live normally they had to first get an education, a home and then break through the boundries of racism.
