slave was not able to hold a case in court, own property, or even vote. The law practically paralyzed the actions of a black man in the nineteenth century.
The most common argument was that when a slave was let free he would try to seek revenge on the “white man”. This scared many people into supporting slavery. In a sense the people feared the revenge of the “Negro” and felt they needed the control.
