Though there exist several different themes and writing styles in early 18th Century writings, two of the greatest satirists of all time and close friends, Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope, shared some of the most effective, moving, and influential thoughts and writing styles of the time period. …with the adult mind in hopes of bringing about change Because of the works of these two writers, satire took off and soared as an effective way of criticizing society. Swift and Pope, though relatively different in their satiric delivery, deserve credit. Without these two men, it seems doubtful that the 18th century would have been little more than nothing, literarily speaking. Swift and Pope are clearly the epitome of satirists then and even now.
