Panama historically has had closer ties with the United States than any country in Latin America other than Mexico. The country is known best for the Panama Canal, which the United States built for both military and trade purposes at the start of the 20th century. The United States maintained sovereignty over parts of Panama

and they became known as cimarrones (singular form is cimarrón), which means wild or unruly. They received this reputation because they attacked travelers along the Camino Real. The Library of Congress (1997) reports that "An official census of Panama City in 1610 listed 548 citizens, 303 women, 156 children, 146 mulattoes, 148 Antillean blacks, and 3,500 African slaves."
